Who we are - The Wheel Parable

The Wheel has four parts: Axis, Heart, Spokes, and Rim.
The Axis is hidden in the heart.
The Heart is connected to the spokes.
The Spokes are attached to the rim.
The Rim is the limit of the wheel.
The Creation of the Wheel
Two architects were chosen to build the Wheel.
As was the custom for all things, they agreed to build the Wheel in the image of the Whole.
The Source of the Whole had appeared to both of them at the same time.
The architects rejoiced, but as they drew the plans, they encountered a problem. One architect had seen “pure Light”. The other had seen “pure Darkness”. They marvelled at the mystery, but were saddened by their failure to reach an agreement.
So they waited.
When the Great Source appeared to them a second time, they looked at each other and laughed. Confident that they were in agreement, they got back to work. But once again, they encountered a problem. One architect had seen “Light clothed in Darkness” while the other had seen “Darkness clothed in Light”. They laughed at themselves, but were saddened by their failure to reach an agreement.
So they waited… and waited.
They became so confused that the Great Source no longer appeared to them.
Saddened by this, they decided that the only solution was to just build the wheel anyway.
Right or wrong, the Source will appear again when the wheel is finished.
This was all that really mattered to them.
So they reached an agreement.
They made the Wheel so that Darkness was clothed in Light and Light was clothed in Darkness.
They built a black Axis clothed in a white Heart, and a white Heart clothed in a black Rim.
The Axis is hidden in the heart.
The Heart is connected to the spokes.
The Spokes are attached to the rim.
The Rim is the limit of the wheel.

This was all that really mattered to them.
So they reached an agreement.
They made the Wheel so that Darkness was clothed in Light and Light was clothed in Darkness.
They built a black Axis clothed in a white Heart, and a white Heart clothed in a black Rim.

The Construction of the Spokes
When the Heart was placed inside the Rim, the architects saw that the edge of the Rim was too far; a distance of more than 6000 units.
They looked for a way to connect the Heart to the Rim, but there was not enough light in the Heart to bridge the gap on both sides. So they pierced the Heart with the Axis which divided the Light into three pure colors: Blue, Red and Yellow. The three colors were used to build the Spokes of the Wheel.
Given the scope of the project, the architects hired a myriad of workers to complete the task.
Whoever agreed to “Light clothed in Darkness” would go to work on the Blue Spoke.
Whoever agreed to “Darkness clothed in Light” would go to work on the Red Spoke.
Whoever remained neutral would go to work on the Yellow Spoke.
To avoid confusion, the Red and Blue spokes were sent in opposite directions and the Yellow spoke was placed in between.
The Creation of the Fourth Spoke
When work on the spokes began, the architects noticed that the Wheel was imbalanced. One out of four workers complained that something was missing; some even began to revolt, trying to halt the construction of the wheel.
The architects realized that the disgruntled workers were in fact suffering from an illness caused by an excess of melancholy. These workers felt so awkward, that they could no longer differentiate their left from their right and were therefore unable to continue building the spokes in a straight line.
To remedy this situation, the architects created a fourth spoke which was Black. When workers would get sick, they were sent to the Black spoke.
As soon as the sick workers arrived, they noticed that nobody was actually working. The fourth spoke was already completely finished, and perfectly straight. The workers of the Black spoke were in fact Healers. They knew how to deal with the disease.
In the hopes of curing the disease, the healers would tell a “secret joke” to all the sick workers. Whenever new patients arrived, the healers would say to them: “Turn that frown upside down!”
If the patients smiled at the joke, they were completely cured.
If the patients fell down laughing, they were incurable but benign.
If the patients continued to frown, they were incurable and contagious.
The contagious patients were quarantined at the edge of the Wheel. Being unable to work in a straight line, they were sent to work on the Rim.
The benign patients were returned to their original spokes, walking backwards. They were also unable to work in a straight line, so they became troubadours and jesters. They were sent back to their spokes in order to serve as inoculations against the disease.
The fully cured patients became healers and remained on the Black spoke.
Now the Fourth Spoke was very poor; it had no light of its own. Like dogs, the Healers had to be satisfied with the drops that fell from the colored spokes.
Every time new patients arrived, they would receive the small drops of color which they carried. Because the healers were poor, every drop of light was precious and they refused to waste even a spark.
The Halting of the Wheel
With the help of the Fourth Spoke Healers, the construction of the Wheel was able to proceed without interruption. However, many sick workers were found contagious and sent to work on the Rim of the Wheel.
By the time the construction of the Wheel had reached its end, the contagious workers of the Rim had multiplied. And with all these infectious workers left to mix together, the disease got worse with more virulent and contagious strains appearing.
When the Spokes were finally reaching the Rim, the spoke workers saw that the Rim was saturated with infectious workers. They knew that all their work would be lost if the disease started to spread.
They refused to attach themselves to the Rim.
So they halted their construction.
The healers of the Black spoke felt responsible for the situation so they decided to search for a cure.
But the moment they started searching, they discovered that all the drops they had gathered from the spokes since the beginning; blue, red, and yellow, had miraculously synthesized into a pure white light. This was the Medicine that could cure the disease. The Rim could finally be healed and attached to the Spokes.
The Turning of the Wheel
Before the Black Spoke Healers could administer the Medicine to the Rim, the architects intervened.
They warned the Healers: “No! If the Medicine is given right away, the Wheel will never have the power to turn. Wait until the disease has reached the Axis itself. Only then should the Medicine be administered.”
The healers listened to the architects and kept the Medicine hidden.
The architects then ordered the workers of the three colored spokes to finish their construction.
As soon as the Spokes were attached to the Rim, the disease began to spread throughout the Wheel. As it crept up the Spokes, all that was straight became crooked, and the Wheel began to turn.
However, many workers had become immune to the disease because of the inoculations that had been sent back to each spoke by the Healers, so the spokes did not break, they were able to bend.
When the Heart was placed inside the Rim, the architects saw that the edge of the Rim was too far; a distance of more than 6000 units.

Eventually the entire Wheel was covered with the disease. It reached the very core of the Wheel, and the Axis itself was infected. The Wheel was turning out of control, about to unhinge.
At the last moment, the Medicine was revealed.
The disease was cured and the Wheel was perfected.
The Great Source appeared once again,
to reside forever in the turning Wheel.
