How we do it - Open Source

Open-source software is computer software that is available in source code form: the source code and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders are provided under a software license that permits users to study, change, improve and at times also to distribute the software. (WP)

We believe that:

• Open Source means FREE. Free as in 'No Cost. Free as in 'Freedom.
  
• Freedom is defined by the '4 freedoms of free software' (Free Software Foundation)
  

1. The freedom to run the program for any purpose.
   
2. The freedom to study how the program works, and change it to make it do what you wish.
   
3. The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor.
   
4. The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements (and modified versions in general) to the public, so that the whole community benefits.
   

• Doing Good is not proprietary. It cannot be patented or belong to any one group or organisation.
• The values that underscore the Open Source movement should underscore all projects seeking to do Good.
  
• There is no need to recreate the wheel. There are some fantastic organisations and individuals that have built great open source tools. We will use some of them and honor their contributions when we do.
  
• We need to contribute as well. That is why we will be making our complete Database Schema available to the Community. It is the graphical depiction of the Good Project Database structure that defines the tables, the fields in each table, and the relationships between fields and tables. This database schema holds ALL the information necessary to manage any impact investment project.
• While the software and the platform are Open Source, the Data is not and is highly secured.
• We are the guardians and the promoters of this project and its underlying movement. Not the owners of it..
